WHEN IF NOT NOW Democracy is not something that can be taken for granted. It took centuries to achieve and must be defended again today. The uprisings of the Salzburg miners and farmers, known as the Salzburg Peasants' War, took place in 1525 and 1526 and were an attempt by the civilian population to rebel against the religious and secular domination of Cardinal Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg. On the occasion of the commemoration of ‘500 years of peasant wars’, WANN WENN NICHT JETZT/ WHEN IF NOT NOW asks about the urgency of action today to defend democracy, and how civil courage and societal engagement can stand up for social justice. Flags serve as orientation, expressions of belonging and communication of demands in uprisings or marches, and are usually associated with masculinity. The ‘Plaisir-Plissée Flag’, which Barbara Holub designed with participants in three workshops, takes on a feminine and diverse momentum instead. The flag will be carried to the Vogtturm on 17 May 2026 and hoisted in a performative procession. Residents and visitors are invited to exchange the fabric ribbons attached to the flag, which show contributions on how to promote ‘joy’ as the basis for collective engagement in order to counteract the perceived powerlessness in these politically difficult times. |
